# Growing stock

**The volume of wood standing in a forest — what exists, as distinct from what is harvested.**

Growing stock is an inventory figure. Ontario publishes it by species: sugar maple at 300,361,212 cubic metres, red oak at 85,019,702, yellow birch at 82,005,013, ash as a group at 42,273,003, basswood at 18,444,080.

It is the most useful provenance number available to an Ontario homeowner, because it says which species the province could keep supplying without importing anything. It is also routinely confused with harvest, which is a different number entirely.

Ontario does not publish a hardwood-specific harvest volume. The species split it does publish stops at spruce, jack pine and poplar. Anyone quoting an Ontario hardwood harvest figure should be asked which document it came from.
