Strip, plank and wide plank

Board-width categories defined by the flooring standard, not descriptive terms a showroom is free to apply as it likes.

The NWFA/NOFMA standard defines them by measurement. Strip is less than 3 inches, or 76.2 mm. Plank is 3 to 5 inches. Wide plank is greater than 5 inches.

The same standard fixes solid flooring thickness at .750 inches — 19.05 mm — with a tolerance of plus or minus .015 inches, or .38 mm.

Width is not only a look. The permitted moisture differential between flooring and subfloor is tighter for wider boards: no more than 4 percentage points for strip under 3 inches, and no more than 2 for flooring 3 inches or wider.
